St. John’s return to the national college basketball scene could take a big step this season with a challenging non-conference schedule, released Tuesday by coach Steve Lavin.
The Red Storm’s non-conference slate includes games against power conference teams Wisconsin, Penn State, Syracuse and a possible matchup with Mississippi or Georgia Tech.

Tommy Brenton’s basketball career will continue at a new level.
Brenton, Stony Brook’s all-time leading rebounder (1,115) and winner of the 2013 Lefty Driesell National Defensive Player of the Year award, reached an agreement to play with Link Togichi Brex, based in the Tochigi Prefecture in Japan.

The regional sports channel announced it has reached an agreement with Fox Sports to televise ACC basketball and football games and Big East basketball games this fall.

Staten Island’s Brian Bernardi is the latest to join Hofstra men's basketball coach Joe Mihalich’s revamped squad, the school announced. The sophomore, who averaged 11.2 minutes and 3.5 points per game as a guard for Southern Methodist University, will have to sit out the 2013-2014 season, per NCAA regulations. He will be eligible to play for three more seasons.

Leading the way for the Gaels class is Rutgers transfer and 6-5 senior Mike Poole and Marshall transfer Kelvin Amayo, a 6-4 guard. Both players saw action at their previous schools. Their experience should help the Gaels overcome the loss of high-scoring guard Lamont “Mo Mo” Jones.

St. John’s will play in the Maggie Dixon Classic on December 22 at Madison Square Garden for the third straight season, the school announced Monday. It will be the third straight season the Red Storm will play in the Classic.
St. John’s will face Texas A&M at 11:00 a.m. Reigning NCAA champion Connecticut will face California in the second game.

After three seasons at Pittsburgh, Brentwood high standout J.J. Moore opted for a chance.
The 6-5 forward has completed the required paperwork to transfer to Rutgers, the school announced Tuesday. Moore averaged eight points and three rebounds in 33 games off the bench for the Panthers last season.
