On the surface, Stony Brook’s move up to the Colonial Athletic Association, regarded by some as the SEC of the Football Championship Subdivision, looks pretty rough after four games. The Seawolves are 1-3 overall and 1-2 in CAA play after blowing an 11-point halftime lead in a 35-21 loss to No. 2-ranked Towson Saturday night at LaValle Stadium.

They are a little wobbly after three straight...

Under the best of circumstances, Stony Brook's home football opener against No. 2 Towson (4-0, 0-0 CAA) on Saturday night at LaValle Stadium would be a major challenge. But after losing two key starters the previous week, the Seawolves (1-2, 1-1) now will face the Tigers without running back Jamie Williams and starting linebacker Grant Nakwaasah.

Williams suffered a rib injury in last week’s...

No. 6 LSU (4-0, 1-0 SEC) @ No. 9 Georgia (3-0, 1-0), 3:30: Georgia QB Aaron Murray has vaulted himself right into the Heisman Trophy conversation. If anyone disagrees with that check his last two games. Murray has completed 39 of 53 passes for 717 yards, seven touchdowns and one interception. He threw for 309 yards and four TDs in the Bulldogs’ 41-30 win over South Carolina. Murray will need to...

Chuck Priore must replace Marcus Coker

If Stony Brook’s first game without powerful running back Marcus Coker is any indication, the Seawolves’ offense will change to feature a running back rotation as a complement to the pass-run threat posed by quarterback Lyle Negron. Coker is out for the season with an abdominal injury, and none of the potential replacements pose the same challenge to a defense.

Cincinnati transfer Jameel Poteat...

Games to watch this weekend

There are many things that could be decided this weekend, including the futures of Mack Brown and Bo Pelini, the plight of Notre Dame and the legitimacy of Auburn and Michigan State. Tennessee needs to beat Florida for the first time in what feels like 50 years, Arizona State needs to prove last weekends win against Wisconsin wasn't a gift and Notre Dame needs to win to keep itself in BCS title...

Seawolves struggle in red zone, kicking game

Stony Brook head coach Chuck Priore shouts instructions

(Credit: Joseph D. Sullivan)

BUFFALO -- There are countless variables in any football game, and that’s especially true for one that last five overtimes. But ultimately, Stony Brook’s 26-23 loss to FBS Buffalo Saturday afternoon at UB Stadium resulted from problems executing in the red zone and the kicking game.

The most obvious was placekicker Nick Ferrara’s nightmare day in which he missed three of six field goal attempts,...

Texas A&M's Johnny Manziel (2) scrambles for yards

(Credit: AP )

It's pretty obvious what the game of the week is. Alabama vs. Texas A&M has enormous implications. Outside of Saturday's Alabama game and a midseason tilt at Ole Miss, the Aggies won't be tested again until a showdown at LSU on November 23. They don't face Florida, Georgia or South Carolina, which means a win against the Crimson Tide would vault them into the top three where they could sit all...

Alabama is fresh off a convincing win over Virginia Tech in its opener a few weeks back and got last Saturday off to rest up for the much-anticipated trip to College Station this week.

The time off was surely a good way for the top-ranked Crimson Tide to reflect on last season’s game against Texas A&M. It’s rematch time as Alabama plays No. 6 Texas A&M and reigning Heisman Trophy winner...

Cody Precht replacing 'Big Mike' Bamiro

Stony Brook's Miguel Maysonet rushes as Cody Precht

(Credit: Kathleen Malone-Van Dyke)

Talk about a big space to fill, junior Cody Precht faces a huge responsibility as he slides from right guard out to the right tackle spot that 6-8, 335-pound Michael Bamiro occupied the past three seasons at Stony Brook. Centerport native Precht has a powerful 6-3, 290-pound frame and the experience and smarts to understand how to play the position.

But “Big Mike,” as Bamiro was known to his...
