For the past month, St. John's has been one of the hottest teams in college basketball. The Red Storm rose like a phoenix from the ashes of its 0-5 start in Big East play to win nine of its next 10 to climb into firm contention for an NCAA Tournament bid.
But momentum only is as good as your last game, and in this case, coach Steve Lavin’s team has come crashing back to earth with two straight...Read more »
With the departure of coach Brad Stevens to the Boston Celtics this season, Butler has gone from a perennial NCAA tournament team to last place in the new Big East. Still, the Bulldogs at least have been a tough out all season, going 2-4 in overtime games.
But St. John’s scored a convincing 17-point win on Jan. 25 at fabled Hinkle Fieldhouse, and when it looked liked the Bulldogs (12-14,...Read more »
There’s no joy in losing for any coach. But unlike the panic and frustration St. John’s fans might feel after a 0-5 start in Big East play, things look different from the head coach’s seat.
Coach Steve Lavin on Saturday night acknowledged feeling as if he were “in the desert with no oasis in sight.” But in the next breath, he added, “I enjoy the challenge of this riddle in terms of getting...Read more »
Last season was good to the New York City metro-area college basketball teams as four squads (Stony Brook, St. John's, Iona, LIU Brooklyn) made post season appearances.
Will there be a repeat of that success? You can make a strong case for it. Stony Brook and St. John's are loaded, while Iona returns five of its top seven scorers. LIU Brooklyn returns one of the nation's top passers, while...Read more »

YES will broadcast up to 10 ACC football games and at least 23 men’s basketball games and select women’s games. YES will also carry up to 10 Big...Read more »
Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim has spent the past season alternately bemoaning the forces of realignment that have destroyed his beloved Big East Conference and fencing with reporters questioning whether the 68-year-old coach is committed to leading the Orange into the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Those emotions came to a head Saturday night in the Georgia Dome after the Orange lost their national...Read more »
Russ Smith and his Louisville teammates got to meet former President Bill Clinton Thursday night after their 74-55 Big East quarterfinal victory over Villanova, but that was a mere footnote to Smith on the day one of the most important men he’d ever met died.
As a faithful alum of Archbishop Molloy, Smith placed a friendly call to the athletic offices of the Queens school on Thursday morning...Read more »
The referees might have succeeded in quieting down Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin when they hit him with a technical during the Bearcats’ 62-43 loss to Georgetown in the Big East quarterfinals Thursday afternoon, but his Irish passion came out in the postgame press conference when asked for his thoughts on the impending Big East breakup.
Cronin got right to the point. “The whole thing is tragic,”...Read more »
St. John’s coach Steve Lavin found it difficult to reflect on the end of the traditional Big East conference in the immediate aftermath of the Red Storm’s 66-53 second-round loss to Villanova in the league tournament Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden. And really, Lavin has just three years coaching in the league and sat out most of last season recovering from prostate cancer surgery.
But...Read more »
In his second season at Providence, Ed Cooley finally began to see dividends as the Friars produced a 7-2 stretch run and eighth-place finish in the Big East heading into the conference tournament. The Friars couldn’t sustain it in a 61-44 second-round loss to Cincinnati Wednesday afternoon at Madison Square Garden, and with an NCAA bid out of the question, Cooley made it clear his 17-14 team has...Read more »
