Notre Dame’s 29-16 victory over Rutgers in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl on Saturday afternoon at Yankee Stadium was significant in that it marked the end of the road for Brian Kelly’s first recruiting class since he took over as head coach for the 2010 season. It culminated a 9-4 season that he said was good but that fell short of the Irish goal of double-digit wins every season.

While many are waiting for the BCS Bowl games to begin, here's a preview of several non-BCS Bowl matchups that are worth a look.
New Era Pinstripe Bowl Notre Dame (8-4) vs. Rutgers (6-6) (Dec. 28, Noon, ESPN): Notre Dame playing in Yankee Stadium? The Fighting Irish will be the big draw. Rutgers should have no problems with that. Just playing Notre Dame in a major venue on national TV is enough...Read more »
Notre Dame’s decision to join the ACC in all sports except football raised a lot of eye brows. The move forced the decision makers in South Bend to make some touch choices, including dropping Michigan from its schedule after 2014.
The move also prompted the Irish to stagger their rivalry with Michigan State a bit. Notre Dame won’t play Michigan State again until 2016. But that doesn’t mean...Read more »
Now that the bowl matchups are set, here is a summary of the best of the non-BCS games.
Las Vegas Bowl Fresno State vs. USC (Dec. 21, 3:30 ABC): This is one of the more intriguing bowl games as Fresno State’s David Carr will take on a legit defense. Considering Carr’s status as an NFL prospect and Fresno State’s near-perfect season, this is a game worth paying for. It could be Carr’s big selling...Read more »

There are many things that could be decided this weekend, including the futures of Mack Brown and Bo Pelini, the plight of Notre Dame and the legitimacy of Auburn and Michigan State. Tennessee needs to beat Florida for the first time in what feels like 50 years, Arizona State needs to prove last weekends win against Wisconsin wasn't a gift and Notre Dame needs to win to keep itself in BCS title...Read more »
It's sad to see the Notre Dame-Michigan rivalry coming to an end.
With a move to the ACC and new scheduling obligations, the Fighting Irish last year opted out of games against Michigan scheduled for 2015-17. The teams will meet next season in South Bend and then that’s it for now. The series could start up at some point in the future, but that’s undetermined.
But let’s be clear on something:...Read more »
Here are a few weekend matchups to look forward to.
No. 14 Notre Dame @ No. 17 Michigan, 8:00: This game isn’t likely to have any national title implications, but a road win in a hostile stadium would be just what Notre Dame needs. Tommy Rees was efficient in the Fighting Irish’s 28-6 win over Temple, completing 16 of 23 passes for 346 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. The competition...Read more »
A few quick notes on the opening weekend of college football.
Rutgers: How long are we to drink the Kool-Aid. Instead of kicking the extra point to force a fifth OT in their 52-51 4OT loss at Fresno State, the Scarlet Knights went for two. Ok, so you like to see coaches taking chances. It can make the games more exciting for the fans. But losses in college football are tough to swallow. One...Read more »
