In just three seasons, Beth O’Boyle lifted Stony Brook’s women’s basketball program from the bottom to a runnerup finish last season in America East and a WNIT bid that was only the second postseason berth in the school’s Division I history. O’Boyle’s achievement was honored Monday when she was named coach of the year by the Met Basketball Writers Association.

After a postseason exodus of talent, it came as good news to St. John’s basketball when 6-11 Christ the King center Adonis Delarosa made a verbal commitment to the Red Storm on Wednesday. Delarosa so far is the lone member of coach Steve Lavin’s 2014 recruiting class.

In making his announcement, Delarosa cited the chance to stay close to home and to play in Madison Square Garden as reasons...

For the past month, St. John's has been one of the hottest teams in college basketball. The Red Storm rose like a phoenix from the ashes of its 0-5 start in Big East play to win nine of its next 10 to climb into firm contention for an NCAA Tournament bid.

But momentum only is as good as your last game, and in this case, coach Steve Lavin’s team has come crashing back to earth with two straight...

If St. John’s had been able to squeeze past No. 9 Villanova Saturday at Wells Fargo Center, the Red Storm probably could have punched their ticket to the NCAA Tournament. But even after their 57-54 loss, Steve Lavin expressed confidence in his team’s ability to build a resume strong enough to meet the criteria used by the Selection Committee.

With the departure of coach Brad Stevens to the Boston Celtics this season, Butler has gone from a perennial NCAA tournament team to last place in the new Big East. Still, the Bulldogs at least have been a tough out all season, going 2-4 in overtime games.

But St. John’s scored a convincing 17-point win on Jan. 25 at fabled Hinkle Fieldhouse, and when it looked liked the Bulldogs (12-14,...

When he comes to the media room, St. John’s coach Steve Lavin dons reading glasses with thick black frames, but not because he needs them to look back with 20-20 hindsight. No, Lavin stayed true to the vision he has held all along about this Red Storm team as a group that would struggle early before ascending in February and March.

It seemed more like wishful thinking when the Red Storm began...

It almost seemed like a gift when Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard announced the suspensions of starters Eugene Teague and Brian Oliver before Thursday night’s St. John’s game at the Prudential Center in Newark. The long climb out of the 0-5 hole the Red Storm dug at the start of Big East play had been draining, and they were due for a letdown...

Admit it. After St. John’s lost its first five Big East games, it was virtually impossible not to write this off as a third straight lost season. But coach Steve Lavin persisted in comparing this team to his first Red Storm team that overcame a so-so start to finish third in the Big East and advance to the NCAA Tournament.

Somehow, some way, Lavin and a group of individual parts have come...

As victories go, St. John’s 77-76 squeaker over Seton Hall Thursday night at Carnesecca Arena wasn’t exactly a confidence booster. It could have been. The Red Storm had a 15-1 run to build 65-48 lead with exactly nine minutes remaining.

But instead of easing across the finish line at the end of a blowout, the ending was a torturous litany of mistakes and misplays that have characterized the...

Steve Lavin: 'I enjoy the riddle'

There’s no joy in losing for any coach. But unlike the panic and frustration St. John’s fans might feel after a 0-5 start in Big East play, things look different from the head coach’s seat.

Coach Steve Lavin on Saturday night acknowledged feeling as if he were “in the desert with no oasis in sight.” But in the next breath, he added, “I enjoy the challenge of this riddle in terms of getting...
