St. John’s sophomore center Chris Obekpa was suspended for the Red Storm’s Tip-Off as well as the team’s two exhibition games against San Francisco State scheduled for Nov. 2 and 3, the University announced Friday. The 6-9 graduate of Our Savior New American was suspended for university policy.

“We expect our student-athletes to conduct themselves in a responsible manner in representing St. John’s University,” coach Steve Lavin said in a statement. “Chris understands this suspension can serve as a learning experience.”

Obekpa led the NCAA in blocked shots (4.03) per game last season and set a school and Big East mark with 133 rejections. Obekpa will continue to practice with the team and be reinstated for the Red Storm’s season opener against No. 21 Wisconsin in Sioux Falls, SD on Nov. 8.
