Tommy Brenton’s basketball career will continue at a new level.

Brenton, Stony Brook’s all-time leading rebounder (1,115) and winner of the 2013 Lefty Driesell National Defensive Player of the Year award, reached an agreement to play with Link Togichi Brex, based in the Tochigi Prefecture in Japan.

Brenton became the ninth player under coach Steve Pikiell and 15th in program history to sign a deal with an overseas team. He will join former teammates Danny Carter, Bryan Dougher, Dallis Joyner and Al Rapier, who are all playing professionally overseas.

"Tommy made an impact on the Stony Brook men's basketball program like no other student-athlete, and it excites me to now call him a professional basketball player," Pikiell said. "He exemplifies everything we hope to develop in a student-athlete; he competed hard on the court and helped us win championships, he earned not only his bachelor's degree, but also his master's degree and now he's a pro. We wish him well as he moves to Japan to begin a new and exciting chapter of his career."

One of the most decorated players in Stony Brook history, Brenton is also the program’s all-time leader in steals (220). Brenton has the most assists (405) in the school’s history as a Division I program.

Brenton was the 2013 America East Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, becoming the second player in conference history to win both awards in the same season.

Stony Brook had its most successful stretch with Brenton, winning three America East regular season titles and earning three trips to the NIT.
