USMMA AT A GLANCE

Coach: Mike Toop (eighth season, 21-49).

Last year: 3-7, 2-4 Liberty Conference.

Watch list: QB Alex Coviello (789 yards rushing, six rushing touchdowns, passed for 581 yards and eight TDs). FB JP Gosselin (1,023 yards), OL Jake Margrey, FS Tyler Washington (77 tackles, two interceptions), DL Scott Bartlett (two sacks), LB James Cameron.

Key stat: USMMA led the Liberty League in rushing last season with 239 yards per game.

Games to watch: Sept 8 at Coast Guard, Sept 29 Rensselaer.

Outlook: "In order to be successful and have a winning season, the offense needs to perform at the level which they are capable," Toop said. "The defense must replace several key starters lost to graduation. The kicking game is a major unknown as we will have new people handling the kicking duties. If we continue the level of improvement accomplished during the offseason, we can surprise people. We have fewer numbers but greater commitment and determination.''
