Two goals for CAA basketball teams this season should be as follows: Avoid Delaware until the tournament final and stay out of the dreaded 8-9 seed game.

Hofstra is well on its way to doing both after stopping Drexel, 53-43, on Wednesday noon affair at the Mack. The score may not indicate it, but it was one of the Pride’s more impressive wins of the season as Drexel shot just 23 perecent (15-64) from the field and just 2-for-18 from three-point range.

Shante Evans led the Pride with her 15th double-double of the season with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Andreana Thomas added 10 points and Anma Onyeuku added a career-high 15 rebounds.

Hofstra held the Dragons to just 14 first-half points. The win puts the fourth-place Pride (12-11, 8-4) within one game of third-place Drexel (16-7, 9-3). It’s worth noting that Drexel lost third-leading scorer and No. 2 rebouder Nicki Jones to a knee injury during the game. It’s a loss that could seriously hurt the Dragons down the stretch.

The Pride women played masterfully since a 1-7 start, with a win over Old Dominion during an 11-4 stretch.

Next up for Hofstra is a home tilt on Sunday against second-place James Madison (16-8, 10-2). Hofstra finishes its season with games at Towson, Old Dominion, home games versus No. 20 Delaware and UNC-Wilmington and a road at Northeastern.

It’s not exactly the easiest stretch of games, but if the Pride can come out on the positive side of its final stretch of games –maybe 4-2– they might just finish in third place and avoid Delaware until the conference final.

With only nine teams eligible for the CAA tournament, the league has added an 8-9 nine play-in game. No team wants to play an extra game and will do everything to avoid it.
