Stony Brook University appears close to signing freshman running back Miguel Maysonet, the most coveted player on the disbanded football team at Hofstra.

Not far behind could be sophomore Brock Jackolski, the two-way player from Floyd.

Leif Shay, who coached Maysonet at Riverhead High School, where he won the 2008 Hansen Award as the top player in Suffolk, has been in frequent contact with Maysonet.

"He definitely wants to stay on Long Island and I know Stony Brook got in there real early to talk to him," Shay said yesterday. "And he was pretty excited about it. I think it's like 85 percent. I think he just wants to wait a couple of days to see who else is going to offer him, but at this point, he really wants to stay on Long Island. It's just him and his mom. Every one else is in Puerto Rico."

Hofstra coach Dave Cohen believes Stony Brook has the inside track on Maysonet, but he referred comment to Stony Brook coach Chuck Priore.

Reached by phone in California, where he is on a recruiting trip, Priore said, "We're in good shape with a few of the kids at Hofstra, and obviously Miguel is one of them that we are excited about recruiting. We've had contact with Brock and his family, and there are very positive conversations with the guys on Long Island.''
