The Stony Brook and Hofstra men's basketball teams will compete in the 16-team College Basketball Invitational, which begins this week. At 7 p.m. Wednesday, Hofstra (20-13) will host Vermont (18-13) and Stony Brook (23-11) will face Mercer (18-15) in Macon, Georgia.
If the Pride wins, it will face the Radford-Delaware State winner on March 23. If the Seawolves win, they will play the Eastern Michigan-Louisiana Monroe winner on March 23. Hofstra and SBU are on different sides of the bracket, but the tournament is re-bracketed after the quarterfinal round.
Mercer lost to Furman in a Southern Conference Tournament semifinal and also has lost 6-6 Darious Moten (11.4), who is injured and will not play against Stony Brook. Mercer upset third-seeded Duke as a 14th seed in the NCAA Tournament last season.
SBU and Hofstra are coming off stunning losses. After edging Vermont in the America East semifinals, the Seawolves held a two-point lead over host Albany in the final before Peter Hooley hit the winning three-pointer with 1.6 seconds left for a 51-50 win. The Pride advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association semifinals before losing to William & Mary, 92-91, on a three-pointer with eight-tenths of a second left in the second overtime.
