Holy Trinity's Alex Robinson will get one final opportunity to fire his fastball against high school competition on Long Island.
The big lefthander, who is bound for Maryland in the fall, will headline an outstanding pitching staff for the Nassau senior All-Stars as they take on Suffolk's best in the Rawlings RTC Grand Slam Challenge at 7 o'clock Friday night at Farmingdale State.
The game will be televised on Cablevision's MSG Varsity Channel 14 and streamed live on MSGVarsity.com. The game will feature a Nassau pitching staff that includes MacArthur's Joe Chiaramonte and Frankie Ziegler, Oyster Bay's Joe Siringo and Herricks' Alex Katz.
Robinson, the state Gatorade player of the year, compiled a 19-2 career record with 189 strikeouts in 128 innings and a 0.77 ERA. The 6-3, 205-pounder, led the Titans to the CHSAA title this season.
"He's a real talent, a player that goes out and gives you an all-out effort every time he takes the mound," Holy Trinity coach Bob Malandro said. "He's one of four of our guys recognized to play in this all-star game."
Robinson will be joined by batterymate Chris Hardardt, the CHSAA catcher of the year, shortstop Joey Devito and second baseman Jack Parenty, the two-time CHSAA player of the year.
Suffolk will counter with Commack catcher Charles Galiano, who was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies this week, and a lineup that includes big hitters like St. Anthony's first baseman Dave Groeneveld, who led the CHSAA with a .489 average.
"There's a lot of pride in these games," Groeneveld said. "It's a chance to play against the best seniors on Long Island and see the guys you read about all the time."
The game is played in memory of former Diamond Award winner Ryan Caulfield, an outstanding catcher at Bethpage and New York Tech. Caulfield, 22, died of complications from Lupus in 2000. All proceeds from the event support research to help find a cure for Lupus.
