Vine Wine Bar is celebrating its three-year anniversary with a series of wine classes. The first one, on Wednesday, April 3 at 7 p.m., is entitled Wine 101 and will teach participants the basics of wine tasting: what is sweet, what is dry, what is fruity; how to distinguish oak-fermented wines from steel fermented; what are tannins, etc.
The evening will start with a glass of Prosecco, after...Read more »

Bread & Butter, a bistro with very extended hours, has opened in the Ramada Plaza Long Island hotel just off exit 63 on the Long Island Expressway in Holtsville. On Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, the place is open 24 hours. Sunday through Wednesday, the kitchen opens at 5 a.m. and closes at 1 a.m.
That kitchen is under the direction of Piers Stringer, a veteran of Shandon Court in Islip...Read more »
Even with ringers turned off, smartphones have a way of interfering with restaurant meals. Next time you eat out, look around and, chances are, you’ll find more than one person in the house checking up on emails and/or text messaging. People dining out with family and friends are so connected to their phones, they’re actually losing out on connecting with those at the table.

Actor Joseph R. Gannascoli is best known for his portrayal of the doomed, gay mobster Vito Spatafore in "The Sopranos."
Now, he has a new but familar role.
On Tuesdays, the amiable Gannascoli, who was a cook before he became an actor, performs in the kitchen at Il Luogo in Lynbrook.
He makes specials. Last night, they included a soulful dish of cavatelli with pork ribs,...Read more »
The month-old Thai Coconut in Wantagh was nearly full the afternoon I stopped in. A well-priced lunch menu ($6.95 to $9.95) was apparently drawing a hungry clientele to this snug little spot near the LIRR station.
The midday deal here is a bit unusual. Included in the price is a choice of canned soda, bottled water or a quartet of mini spring rolls. In the future, I'd opt for the liquids,...Read more »
Crave Restaurant and Bar opened last week in the large space across from the Port Washington LIRR station that was most recently — and briefly — occupied by Haven Grill. Owner Sam Alexander worked in the Long Beach restaurants Grillfire and Nick’s Tuscan Grill, neither of which are reopening after being shuttered in the wake of Sandy.
Alexander characterized the new venture as “classic American,...Read more »
There's always a good reason to enjoy pasta. On this sunny March afternoon, here are 10 full-flavored choices from five busy kitchens. Join the party now or, if you're observing Passover, next week is fine, too.
At Verace in Islip: look for the lively penne alla puttanesca, tossed with olives, tomatoes, capers tomato and zucchini; and the pristine linguine with garlic and olive oil.

There are plenty of reasons to visit La Pace with Chef Michael in Glen Cove.
Here are three: sfogliatelle, warm chocolate cake, dark chocolate mousse.
Pictured above are the flaky, multilayered sfogliatelle, the delicate, clamshell shaped pastries with a sweet ricotta-based filling, finished with vanilla and orange oil. They're served warm. Given the portion at La Pace, three reasons...Read more »
Cheeburger Cheeburger in Plainview has closed. It was the first branch of the '50s-themed franchise to open on Long Island and was located in the same strip mall as Fairway Market. Trademark items: imaginatively topped burgers, hand-cut fries and milkshakes in a wild array of flavors.
There are currently two other Long Island Cheeburger Cheeburger restaurants, at 46 Great Neck Rd., Great Neck,...Read more »
