The new 212 Sushi Lounge in Rockville Centre takes over the former digs of Chichen Itza, a short-lived Mexican restaurant. The space has been entirely gutted and renovated, said Jeff Foroglou, who co-owns the new dining spot with Barry Huang, a partner at Aji 53 in Bay Shore and Smithtown.
The menu, said Foroglou, covers a lot more than sushi. It lists crispy rock shrimp tempura ($9), oysters...Read more »
New to Hicksville is George’s Place, a casual counter-serve eatery serving Greek and American specialties. Chef-owner George Mirmigos said he makes just about everything from scratch — including hand-cut fries. The only exception, he said, is the gyro, which is commercially made.
On the menu: a horiatiki salad of tomato, onion, cucumbers feta and olives ($9.95), a cheeseburger ($5.50), a ...Read more »
The Panera Bread on Old Country Road (just west of Manetto Hill Road) in Plainview offers something no other Long Island branch provides: a drive-through window.
Which means that without leaving your car, you can get anything on the store’s cafe and bakery menu. Like a Mediterranean egg white sandwich in the morning. Or, for lunch or dinner, chicken noodle soup and a chipotle chicken panino....Read more »
There’s a bit of irony in the name of the burger spot that just made its debut in the former Plainview home of Cheeburger Cheeburger (which still has locations in Farmingdale and Great Neck). DirtyBurger is all about clean eating — hormone and antibiotic-free beef and from-scratch preparations. Even the ketchup is made on premises.
Chef Ian Russo came up with the name after winning a “best...Read more »
New in Oceanside is Phat Daddy’s Pub, occupying the former digs of Jonathan's, which was also an Irish pub. In fact, Phat Daddy's owner Michael Weiss said, the site has housed a bar since 1961.
This is one, though, that's serious about its food. A team of three chefs — Theresa Wallach, Scott Boutiette and Robert Reed — puts out a menu of pub-style specialties and just about everything...Read more »
Kumo Sushi Hibachi & Lounge, an offshoot of Kumo Sushi in Plainview, enters the busy Bay Shore Japanese restaurant scene, with both Aji 53 and Mitsui Japanese Restaurant just steps away. What differentiates this place from the Plainview original is the presence of six hibachi tables. And there’s also separate seating for 100, said manager Louis Lin.
Hibachi entrees, which come with clear...Read more »
Sweet Tomato Brick Oven Pizza & Grill just made its debut in the St. James space that last housed Attilio’s Grill (but is perhaps best known for hosting the former Bella Vita City Grill). The new eatery offers brick-oven pizza and an Italian repertoire. Co-owner Allison Clusel said that, for now, former Attilio's owner Sam Mancini is the chef.
The gas-fired brick oven...Read more »
Now blooming in Farmingdale: The Wild Rose Bar & Grill, newly opened in the freestanding building that last housed the short-lived Hudson House. Unlike its predecessor, which had its access blocked by months of roadwork, this place just north of Republic Airport on New Highway is easily reachable.
It's also outfitted with a full bar and shares ownership with the Rosewood Inn in Melville....Read more »
Long Island's ever-expanding cadre of specialized burger spots has a new addition: Zinburger Wine & Burger Bar. The first branch of the chain to hit New York just opened Tuesday at Walt Whitman Shops in Huntington Station.
Unlike some burger places, this one offers full table service. The contemporary decor features lots of wood and earth tones, and the place has a full bar. The...Read more »
Hot off the grill: A new Smashburger has opened in New Hyde Park, joining existing locations in Hicksville, Port Washington and Wantagh.
The rule is that you order at the counter and get a number and your food will be brought to you. Burgers, which may only be had medium or very well done, are smashed and seasoned on the grill and served on “artisan” buns (egg, multigrain, spicy chipotle or...Read more »
