Soup kitchens to collect on mayoral bet
Five soup kitchens will soon serve up New England clam chowder, Boston Cream pies and the rest of the spoils from the Super Bowl bet Mayor Michael Bloomberg wagered with Beantown Mayor Thomas Menino.
The Giants' win also earned the charities, one in each borough, pounds of Boston-produced ice cream, pizza and even sun-dried tomato chicken sausages.
"If I root for anybody, it's for the New York Giants. It's great to see the underdog win, especially around here where we're big on underdogs," said Chef Michael Ennes, director of training at Broadway Community, a soup kitchen in Morningside Heights, where visitors will truly be tasting the Giants' sweet victory.
A spokeswoman for the Boston mayor's office said the city plans to make its pay out sometime next week.
The Giants raked in another round of goodies for New Yorkers just last week. Green Bay mayor James Schmitt sent pounds of steaks, cheese and chocolates to make good on a bet he lost on the Giants NFC Championship win over the Packers.
Those winnings went to an Upper East Side bar that changed its name from Brady's to Manning's to honor Giants quarterback Eli Manning over his Patriot counterpart, Tom Brady. A Bloomberg spokesman said the food was given to the bar to create more excitement for the Super Bowl.
The establishment's owner, Danny Brady, a huge Giants fan, served up about 70 steak sandwiches and pounds of cheese free of charge to customers and fans when he and Bloomberg announced the name change last Thursday.
"The mayor supplied the food and I supplied the beer," Brady said. "The steak was fantastic, but when they said New York cheese is better, they're right."
