CHICAGO - The Giants did something last night that usually doesn't occur in a preseason game.
"Quite frankly," Tom Coughlin said, "we got embarrassed."
Those are harsh words for a so-called meaningless game. But Coughlin was in regular-season rage after the 17-3 loss to the Bears. "We have no excuses," he said. "There isn't one phase that I thought we played well. I didn't think we were very physical at all."
The players echoed that disappointment. But Justin Tuck found at least one positive in being negative.
"I think this loss will wake some people up," the defensive end said. "It's easy for us to look at the talent we have on this football team, especially on defense, and kind of get complacent. In a way I'm kind of glad we played like that because I know from just talking to guys on the sideline, we don't ever want to see that, we don't ever want to have that feeling."
So much for being meaningless.
Alford sprains MCL
DT Jay Alford, who had been having a very strong camp, left the game in the third quarter with a knee injury. He'll undergo further tests, but the initial diagnosis was a sprained MCL. Alford, who was carted off the field after his injury, returned to the sideline later with his leg wrapped and was laughing and joking with teammates.
