Tom Coughlin bristled at the idea that running back Brandon Jacobs is not getting enough carries. "Funny, you guys weren't talking about this a few weeks ago when you thought he wasn't running well," he said during yesterday's conference call.
Now he is running well. In the last four games, he's averaged 5.13 yards per carry, right around the numbers we've come to expect from Jacobs. But he's also had three games with 13 or fewer carries among those four - his three lowest of the season - and none with more than 20. In the first five games of the season, he was averaging 20 carries and 3.55 yards.
On Sunday, Jacobs had 31 yards on four carries on the first drive and had just seven carries the rest of the game to finish with 67. He did leave the field for a while in the third quarter and seemed to have his right knee examined, but neither Jacobs nor Coughlin said an injury was limiting his reps in a rotation with Ahmad Bradshaw and even Danny Ware, who had two carries. "It just so happened the drives I was in were probably short drives," Jacobs said Sunday. "Everything was the same."
Coughlin said, "The rotation is going to take place; we did end up with 29 runs, which is good. We are going to continue to utilize all of the backs as best we can."
Giant steps
DE Justin Tuck left the game late with what he called a "lower extremity" injury but Coughlin said he was doing OK Monday . . . On the holding call against Chris Snee on first-and-goal from the 4, Coughlin did not go so far as to say it was a bad call, but questioned the timing of it. "I just hate to see something called like that that determines the outcome of the game," he said.
