While the Giants are milling through a list of possible head coaches — and could name one by the end of the week — their old one is garnering some attention on the market.

“I’m not surprised,” Giants co-owner Steve Tisch said of Tom Coughlin’s interviews with the Eagles and 49ers in recent days. “He’s a great candidate.”

Coughlin interviewed with the Eagles on Monday. “(Eagles owner) Jeff Lurie said his meeting with Tom went very well,” Tisch said from the owners meetings in Houston. On Tuesday, Coughlin met with 49ers GM Trent Baalke in the New York area while team CEO Jed York was at the owners meetings in Houston.

Because Coughlin “stepped down” from his position with the Giants with one year remaining on his contract, teams interested in the 69-year-old two-time Super Bowl champ must ask the Giants for permission.

While Giants fans may cringe at the idea of Coughlin possibly coaching the NFC East rival Eagles next season, Tisch said they would not stand in the way of that possibility. The Giants granted the Eagles permission to speak with Coughlin even though they are, well, the Eagles.

“Yeah, but we were not going to not cooperate,” Tisch said. “Of course, he should meet with the Eagles. He should meet with any team that’s interested in talking to him.”
