Arrests for vandalism made during Giants parade

Dozens of young New York Giants fans jumped on the hoods, trunks and tops of cars and buses along the parade route through lower Manhattan Tuesday, partly marring an otherwise joyous event designed to celebrate the football team's Super Bowl victory.

At least four different incidents were caught on videotape around the intersection of Reade Street and Broadway.

During one of them, youngsters ganged up on a yellow taxi and smashed its windshield with their elbows despite a woman's efforts to pull them off the car.

The scenes were reminiscent of others occasionally played out worldwide following key sporting events.

Much of the mayhem was caught on videotape by media outlets, including newsday.com.

Buses, vans and even police vehicles were not immune, as a few of the estimated 3 million people assembled to catch a glimpse of Eli Manning, David Tyree and other Giants at the parade climbed onto cars, perhaps initially to get a better view, but then whipped themselves into a frenzy.

Some of the overzealous celebrating took place outside the view of police officers, but officers did rein in several rowdy revelers. Authorities said they arrested at least 30 people and charged them with criminal mischief for attacking unmarked police vehicles.

No estimates on the extent of damages were available yesterday.
