After a career spent shuttling between positions on the
offensive line, David Diehl seems to have found a home at left tackle. And now the Giants are going to pay him as a premier player at that position.
Diehl signed a new six-year contract worth $31 million late last month, an agreement with escalator clauses that increase his salary by between $750,000 and $1.1 million each year, provided he plays tackle. If he is moved back to guard, the escalators are frozen. Diehl had three years remaining on his former contract extension.
Peter Schaffer, Diehl's agent, called the new agreement a "reward for the way he conducts himself on and off the field." In fact, Diehl has never missed a game in his five seasons with the Giants and has started at every line position except center.
Diehl replaced Luke Petitgout at left tackle last season. The Giants can also save themselves money if they ever move Diehl back to guard. That could become significant in negotiations with guard Chris Snee, who is reportedly looking for a long-term contract.
Strahan still undecided. In an appearance on "FOX & Friends" yesterday, Michael Strahan addressed his looming retirement decision. "Right now I know where I'm leaning but I don't want to say it until I'm sure," he said. "Once you either say you're going to play or you're not going to play, you can't go back, at least in my opinion. So I want to make sure I'm completely sure."
At least one of his teammates sounded pretty sure that Strahan will retire. Linebacker Antonio Pierce, speaking on WFAN, said: "The inside of me tells me that Strahan played his last game with the New York Giants as a champion, and that's not a bad way to go out."
Jets re-sign Poteat
The Jets re-signed veteran cornerback Hank Poteat to a one-year deal. Poteat was an unrestricted free agent. He spent the last two seasons with the Jets and notched a career-high 45 tackles. Poteat, 30, had the first two interceptions of his eight-year NFL career in consecutive games last season. - AP
