Hip surgery may be the last resort Osi Umenyiora, but the former All-Pro defensive end isn't ready just yet.

According to the Newark Star-Ledger, Umenyiora was told by noted hip specialist Marc Philippon -- who performed surgeries on Yankee slugger Alex Rodriguez, retired QB Kurt Warner and a host of other high-profile athletes -- that he needs surgery to repair side effects from a torn hip flexor that kept Umenyiora out of five games in 2006.

Earlier this month, Umenyiora traveled to the Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colo., to visit Philippon, according to a source close to the situation. The person told the Star-Ledger that Philippon scheduled Umenyiora’s operation for the near future, but the doctor, Umenyiora and the Giants medical staff eventually agreed to pass on surgery for the time being. Instead the two-time Pro Bowl selection, who lost his starting job last season, will try to manage the injury by playing through it.
