Boss back in Big Blue? Doesn't sound like it
Imagine the Giants bringing back both Steve Smith and Kevin Boss a year after they left in free agency!
For a while (ok, about an hour or so) it looked like that might be a tantalizing possibility. Smith is a free agent -- or will be at 4 p.m. tomorrow -- and Boss is going to be released by the Raiders tomorrow according to multiple reports. Hey, the Giants need a wide receiver and a tight end, right? Why not get the band back together?
Nope. From what I’m hearing the Giants will have no interest in pursuing a reunion with either player when free agency begins. Yes, they will likely need a wide receiver to replace Mario Manningham, who will almost certainly go to another team as a free agent. And yes, they do need a tight end to come in and replace Jake Ballard and Travis Beckum, both of whom tore their ACLs in the Super Bowl and are not expected to be ready for the start of the 2012 season. But no, those pieces will not be Smith or Boss.
Perhaps later in free agency, if other options don’t work out for the Giants and either of the two former Giants are still available, something could work out. But there are too many questions regarding the health of the players – Smith’s knees, Boss’ concussions – plus the bad taste that was left from Smith’s sudden departure last summer, to make them immediate targets in free agency.
