Victor Cruz said he was happy with the team’s performance against the Eagles on Sunday. It showed the kind of team the Giants should be.

“Unfortunately,” he said, “we couldn’t be that team when it mattered most.”

Both Cruz and Antrel Rolle, who was also on WFAN today, addressed that idea of being able to turn it on and off. While Rolle said he couldn’t say for sure that players on the team felt that would happen because it did last season, Cruz speculated that previous success along that narrative had gotten into the Giants’ heads.

“I guess in a sense we get complacent a little bit or we get comfortable in our position and think that we can let a few slip away and think that we’ll have our normal late-season push and continue that right up through the postseason,” Cruz said. “Unfortunately that didn’t work out for us … It’s a little something we have to learn from and learn that once we have a lead like the 6-2 start that we want to keep hold of it.”

Rolle said he didn’t know if the Giants felt they could flip a switch, but he knows that they shouldn’t have.

“I don’t think there’s any team in the NFL that can just turn the switch on at any given moment,” Rolle said. “It’s either going to be in you or it’s not. There’s not a switch that can be turned on and you can go out there and automatically win games.”

Both players said they wanted to rectify the need to flip switches in 2013.

“No matter what kind of start we have in the beginning of the season, first six games, first eight games, I want to continue our hunger and continue our dominance,” Cruz said of 2013. “We always start off well and feel good about ourselves and then we kind of fizzle off throughout the middle and try to bring it back up in the end and that’s hard to do in this league.”

Rolle said he wants to make sure that next season’s Giants are “hunting” and promised that “we’re going to hunt from the first preseason game all the way to the Super Bowl if God (willing) we make it there. Just try to be a better overall team on a more consistent basis week in and week out and we’ll see where everything else takes us from there.”
