Could Dwight Freeney be the Giants' new Osi Umenyiora?

If the Giants are looking to replace Osi Umenyiora in free agency, they may have the inside track on Dwight Freeney.

Talking on SiriusXM NFL Radio on Wednesday, Freeney, who will be a free agent in March, said he grew up a Giants fan and that it “would be a dream” to play for the team and that coming back home to New York “is definitely attractive.”

Good to know.

Of course, Freeney isn’t signing with the Giants just yet. He’ll have plenty of options. He also spoke glowingly about playing for the Jets – he said Rex knows how to free up pass rushers – and even said he wouldn’t mind suiting up for the Patriots after all those years with the Colts.

“The biggest thing that I’m looking for is a contender,” Freeney said. “It doesn’t necessarily have to be a Super Bowl team, but at least a team that is contending for the Super Bowl, in the playoffs, and fits the things that I do … I played 11 years and I want to continue to win. I can’t see myself going to a non-winner.”

The Giants could certainly use the addition of a player like Freeney at defensive end to bolster the pass rush that took a step backwards. And after leaving the Colts, Freeney may be humbled enough not to be too concerned about playing time and starting status and some of the things that were on Osi’s mind during the last few years.

It would also give Freeney a chance to return to a 4-3 scheme after the Colts switched to a 3-4 under Chuck Pagano.

Here’s a look at the stats that Umenyiora and Freeney have put up in their careers:

DWIGHT FREENEY
11 seasons, 163 games
298 tackles
107.5 sacks
44 forced fumbles

OSI UMENYIORA
10 seasons, 132 games (missed all of 2008 with a knee injury)
376 tackles
75 sacks
32 forced fumbles
