Fewell: Hard to take Stevie Brown off the field
Most people wondered whether Stevie Brown would still have a roll in the Giants’ secondary once Kenny Phillips came back from his knee injury. Turns out the Giants were thinking just the opposite and trying to figure out how Phillips would fit in with Brown still on the field.
Defensive coordinator Perry Fewell said yesterday that having all three of the Giants’ safeties healthy is “a good problem to have,” and the play of Brown has gotten his creative juices flowing in regard to a three-safety look that the Giants employed in recent years with Phillips, Antrel Rolle and Deon Grant.
“Because Stevie has emerged and come on like this, it gives me more ideas to have the three-safety package and now we can go forward more with that,” Fewell said.
As for who will be the starting safety – Phillips or Brown – Fewell hedged by saying that no decision has yet been made, but he did give an edge to Brown.
“Brown’s been playing really well so it’s hard to unseat him right now,” Fewell said. “We’ll find a way for Kenny to get on the field.”
