Giants put 'toe in water' for Charles Woodson, per report, but don't expect a cannonball

When Charles Woodson was released from the Packers earlier this offseason, the Giants made some inquiries about the veteran safety that they considered “due diligence.” That was in February. Now it’s the middle of May and Woodson is still without a team.

And apparently the Giants are renewing their interest. Woodson’s agent, Carl Poston, told ESPN that the Giants have “just put their toe in the water again” for the 2009 Defensive Player of the Year and free agent.

Don’t expect a cannonball, though.

The Giants have Antrel Rolle and Stevie Brown penciled in as their starting safeties, have the option of moving Terrell Thomas between corner and safety, re-signed Aaron Ross who can also play the position, and drafted Cooper Taylor at the position just a few weeks ago. So they have bodies at safety (although there would always be room to upgrade with Woodson). And they don’t have an exceptional amount of money to offer Woodson.

Woodson, interestingly, just completed a visit with the Broncos yesterday and left without a contract. That was probably enough to pique the Giants’ interest to the point that they inquired as to what Woodson is looking for. If it’s a contender he wants, then the Giants will be a good fit. If it’s a big payday, then the Giants probably won’t be much of a factor in the decision-making process.

Of course even the specter of Giants interest could be enough to push any of the other half dozen or so teams interested in Woodson towards upping their offer or even making one if they haven’t already.

For now, though, there is no visit scheduled between the Giants and Woodson and whatever interest there is between the two sides seems to be minimal and cursory and probably just more “due diligence.”
