The last time we heard from Giants running back coach Jerald Ingram on David Wilson, he was basically skewering the rookie as not ready to play in the NFL. That was when he had the luxury of doing so because Ahmad Bradshaw and Andre Brown were handling most of the duties.

This year, though, Bradshaw is no longer with the team and Brown is coming off a broken bone in his leg. The Giants will need Wilson to be a big-time back and play up to his first-round price tag. Does Ingram think he’s ready for that?

“David’s got the explosiveness, go to the house ability, that kind of thing,” Ingram said last night at ESPN The Magazine’s Pre-Draft party. “He’s courageous, too, as a runner. He’s got to learn to become more of a protector, which he has been working on.”

Wilson appears to know the offense from a mental standpoint.

“We’ve tested him within the system, he did well a week ago, and knowing what we’re doing and how to protect,” Ingram said. “Now he’s physically learning how to protect his quarterback, and he’s looking forward to the challenge which so far I’m pretty excited about where he is right now. Every day we’re just going to grow.”

Ingram said there would be a competition to start between Brown and Wilson. That decision might even be based on the opponent and whether Wilson’s speed can take advantage of a slower defense or Brown’s physical running can be used against a less stout team. He also said that we shouldn’t forget about Da’Rel Scott, who showed some good things in the preseason. But the main focus seems to be on Wilson and Brown.

“I’m ready to coach these two young guys and I’m excited for what their heart is,” Ingram said. “In my mind it’s their time to shine.”
