The Giants always talk about their "Next man up" philosophy. This is taking things to a whole new level, though.

Will Hill has been suspended for the next four games for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances. The first-year safety said he tested positive for Adderall, a prescription drug that two other Giants have been suspended for using since the end of last season. Ironically Hill’s suspension creates room on the active roster for safety Tyler Sash, who just finished serving his four-game punishment for using the banned substance.

Hill said he had a doctor’s prescription for Adderall prior to signing with the Giants on May 14. Shortly after that he was told of the league’s list of banned substances in a meeting for new players.

“I knew at that point that this may be an issue,” Hill said. “I was tested and the results came back that Adderall was in my system. I appealed but lost the appeal.”

Hill has played nickelback for the Giants with Jayron Hosley sidelined by a hamstring injury. He also contributed on special teams on Sunday, forcing a fumble on a kickoff return and covering up an onsides kick attempt by the Browns. He’ll be eligible to return following the team’s Nov. 4 game against the Steelers.

Running back Andre Brown was the other Giants player to test positive for Adderall, but he had his suspension overturned in the offseason.

Hill, who was a star at Florida but was not drafted or signed by an NFL team last season because of personal issues, was put on notice early by the Giants that he would not be given much slack in his behavior.

“I accept full responsibility for this situation, and it won’t happen again,” Hill said. “The Giants have given me a great opportunity when nobody else would, and I don’t take that for granted. I feel badly this has happened. I will work hard and stay in great shape these next four weeks so I can come back and contribute to this team after my suspension.”
