Justin Tuck said that when he came off the field from last night’s four-sack performance against the Redskins, one of the first texts he saw on his phone was from Osi Umenyiora. The two had been teammates for years and remain close friends even though Umenyiora is playing for the Falcons this year.

So what did Osi tell Tuck?

“It was an amazing performance from him and I told him how happy I was for him,” Umenyiora wrote in an email to Newsday.

It was just the sixth time that a Giants player had four or more sacks in a game. Lawrence Taylor had four sacks twice (1984 and 1986) and Michael Strahan did it once (2001). Pepper Johnson had 4.5 in 1991. And of course Umenyiora set the franchise record with six of them against the Eagles in 2007.

Which is why Umenyiora jokingly told Tuck that his joy for his friend did have a limit.

“I was going to be very happy for him unless he got six sacks,” Umenyiora wrote. “I told him I will hold on to that record.”
