It’s still a long way until Sunday, but the Giants caught a glimpse of some good news on their practice field this morning.
Prince Amukamara, who missed the opener with a sprained ankle from the preseason, was practicing and it seemed to be that he was doing so without any physical limitations. He was running, jumping, cutting, backpedaling, and doing all of the things that an NFL cornerback needs to do.
That should help settle some anxiety as the Giants were getting precariously thin at the position. Michael Coe, who started against the Cowboys, was on the side today with a hamstring injury he suffered in the game.
As mentioned, there are still quite a few days until Sunday against the Bucs. Just there would be little sense in panicking if Prince were not practicing today, there is little sense in rejoicing. The true tests will come on Wednesday and Thursday. But so far, it looks like Prince’s plan to return for Week 2 is on track.
Besides Coe, LB Keith Rivers (hamstring) and S Kenny Phillips (undisclosed at this time) were not practicing. The Giants have a long week so they’ll take this practice as an extra day and not push anyone. Wednesday will be the key day for Phillips and Rivers.
Marvin Austin and James Brewer were both practicing. They each missed the opener with back issues. Looks like they’ll be back this week. We might finally get to see Austin in a regular-season game.
And meanwhile, off on the side, both Travis Beckum and Chris Canty were doing some rigorous running and cutting. Canty in particular looked good sprinting around a hoop on the ground. Five more weeks on the shelf for them on PUP.
The Giants also announced some practice squad moves that were made over the long weekend. They added CB Terrence Frederick and C/G Scott Wedige and terminated the contracts of T Matt McCants and WR Brandon Collins. McCants was the Giants’ sixth-round pick this past spring.
