Ramses Barden (concussion) and Hakeem Nicks (knee/foot) leave Giants thin at WR

The Giants practiced today with four healthy wide receivers on the active roster. Four. I suppose that’s all you really need at any given time anyway, but the dwindling numbers in that group must be a concern for a team that relies so much on the pass (by design or otherwise).

The latest injured receiver is Ramses Barden, who suffered a concussion late in the Eagles game. It was likely on the play when Nnamdi Asomugha was flagged for pass interference and safety Kurt Coleman came flying in from behind and clipped the back of Barden’s helmet. Which means, of course, that the key play in the game on Sunday – the pass to Barden in which he was flagged for offensive pass interference – occurred while he was concussed. Digest that.

Anyway, Barden came in yesterday, Tom Coughlin said, complaining of some symptoms and so they put him through the concussion protocols.

“They sent him for the evaluation yesterday,” Coughlin said. “I think a lot of the symptoms were okay, but there was enough there to slow him down.”

Barden did not practice. Neither did Hakeem Nicks, whose knee has become a big issue for the Giants. Tom Coughlin said the joint remains swollen, but the team is unsure of why.

“Could be the weather,” Coughlin said with gallows humor.

Coughlin did say that Nicks “looks pretty good walking.” So there’s that.

The loss of those players for today at least and possibly for Sunday leaves the Giants with Victor Cruz, Domenik Hixon, rookie Rueben Randle and Jerrel Jernigan as their only active wide receivers. They also have David Douglas on the practice squad.

Meanwhile, there were plenty of other areas of concern on the injury report as 13 players were listed and eight of them did not practice. Besides Barden and Nicks, those who were not practicing included David Baas (hand) who had a wrap from his hand all the way up to his shoulder, Rocky Bernard (quad), Michael Boley (hip), Kenny Phillips (knee), Keith Rivers (hamstring), Chris Snee (hip) and Corey Webster (hand). Antrel Rolle (knee) was practicing, as was Jayron Hosley (hamstring). David Diehl (knee) was doing some individual drills.
