Report: Gilbride Jr. blocked from Bucs
When the Bucs hired Mike Sullivan to be their offensive coordinator, this was what I Tweeted:
“Mike Sullivan was a big fan of Kevin M. Gilbride's. Don't be surprised if he winds up in Tampa Bay as well as a position coach.”
The Giants blocked me from getting credit for that prediction. They also apparently blocked Gilbride. According to the NFL.com, the Bucs did in fact inquire about interviewing the son of the Giants’ offensive coordinator who has been on the staff for the last two seasons, but that request was denied. Gilbride, who was a college quarterback and a receivers coach at the collegiate level, was to interview for the Bucs’ quarterbacks coach job.
It may seem like a slap to Gilbride, but things just might work out for him with the Giants. The Giants have already lost two offensive assistants, so they certainly want to stop the bleeding. But that does leave two spots on the staff that are still unfilled: quarterbacks and assistant offensive line. Gilbride could be a candidate for either of them, or the possibility exists that he could coach the receivers and Sean Ryan would be promoted to quarterbacks coach (as Sullivan was two years ago).
Tom Coughlin speaks this weekend at the Combine in Indianapolis. Perhaps he’ll be able to shed some light on his coaching staff and the vacancies.
By the way, the Bucs will have two coordinators under Greg Schiano who have Giants roots: Sullivan on offense and Bill Sheridan on defense. Schiano said he will leave the play-calling up to those two men.
