T-Rock's Take on the Giants

Practice report 7/25: Kennard hits, Eli falls, and Coughlin yells

And here I thought Devon Kennard looked good when he wasn’t allowed to hit people. Put the kid in shoulder pads and … whoa boy!

The rookie linebacker – let me rephrase that, rookie STARTING linebacker – made the hit of the day early on in the team’s first practice with shoulder pads. It was during a special teams drill in which he was to drop back and set up to block an on-coming gunner. In...

'Four Downs' for July 24

Realizing how difficult it can be to keep up with every detail throughout the day, I’ll try to post a digest each night that lets you know what the most significant parts of training camp were so you can at least appear to be in tune with the team when you gather around the water cooler.

Here are the four most important things you need to know about what went down at Giants training camp today:

Practice report for 7/23: A quick pace, a quick break, and a Wynn-win

Head Coach Tom Coughlin of the Giants speak

(Credit: Mike Stobe)

I said yesterday that I would try to time the snaps when the Giants were in the hurry-up portion of their offense, and I am nothing if not a man of my word. The results that I procured indicate that the Giants are moving at a very brisk speed.

First some background on my un-scientific procedure. I used the stopwatch function on my iPhone and hit the lap button every time the ball was snapped....

Practice report 7/22: Giants pick up the pace

As a reporter who tries to jot down a note on every snap in training camp, this summer is going to be a challenge. That’s because the tempo of practice was noticeably quicker than it has been in the past. I don’t have an exact time – I think I’ll try to bring a stopwatch and figure that out in the coming days believe it or not -- but the snaps-per-minute were definitely ramped up.

“There are...

Tom Coughlin to Giants: See you soon

New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin answers

(Credit: Kathleen Malone-Van Dyke)

The Giants may be on vacation for the next 31 days, but Tom Coughlin made it clear to players that they are still Giants.

“The ‘NY’ never comes off,” he told his players as they departed with the close of minicamp on Thursday.

“We always talk about being smart,” Coughlin said, explaining his message. “Be responsible. Don’t let someone who has nothing invested in your future make decisions...

Making noise on offense

One thing about the new Giants offense was obvious at Wednesday’s minicamp practice: It was louder.

But not because of the players.

Instead it was the coaches who were barkin’, screamin’, cajolin’, yellin’ (and yes, sometimes cussin’) with the kind of urgency that a team feels when it has one day of work remaining before a month's vacation and the start of training camp.

Tom Coughlin...

With Will Hill gone, Quintin Demps gets the 'bump'

KANSAS CITY, MO - DECEMBER 01: Defensive back

(Credit: Getty Jamie Squire)

When Quintin Demps signed with the Giants, it seemed like his immediate impact would be on special teams. The Giants were looking to boost their kickoff return game and Demps gave them speed and experience at the position (plus an in-person audition from when he returned a punt for a touchdown against the Giants in Kansas City last year). That he played safety was kind of an afterthought.

Now,...

Coughlin: David Wilson's neck is 'right where it should be'

New York Giants running back David Wilson talks

(Credit: AP / Julio Cortez)

A day after David Wilson got the good-but-not-great news that his neck is healing properly and that he should be cleared for the start of training camp -- but hasn't been cleared yet -- Tom Coughlin was happy that his running back seems to be on the road back to the field.

“No question about it,” Coughlin said. “Four-and-a-half months out (from surgery), looking forward to August. Progress...

Giants go through whole draft without taking a tight end

Giants tight end Adrien Robinson practices during team

(Credit: James Escher)

If you thought the Giants’ pre-draft talk about not needing a flashy new tight end from this year’s crop of incoming players was a smokescreen, well, the joke is on you. Because seven picks later, the Giants still have the same four largely unproven players at the position (although they do appear to be signing undrafted free agent Xavier Grimble from USC, the official announcement of which will...
