Giants fans do not figure to be in a cheerful mood Sunday upon the team's return home from back-to-back routs on the road, but Tom Coughlin made a plea for them to muster some positive energy.

"I'm hoping our fans are as boisterous and supportive as they've ever been -- maybe even more," the coach said yesterday.

"I just hope everyone rallies around our team right now.

"The players need it, we all need it, we all need to feel that great support and the 12th man, playing at home in the division , there's certainly every reason in the world to be excited about that."

Webster returns

Cornerback Corey Webster (groin), who has not played in two weeks, and offensive lineman David Diehl (thumb), who has not played this season, both practiced Wednesday and seem to be in line to play Sunday.

"It just got a little sore but everything's feeling fine now," Webster said. "I'm moving and making all the moves in the right direction."

Rookies to rescue

Rookie defensive linemen Johnathan Hankins and Damontre Moore could see their roles expand this weekend. "Just an eager puppy that's ready to go in there and go play," Moore said . . . Safety Will Hill is eligible to play after serving a four-game league suspension. Hill said he is ready to help immediately . . . Eli Manning spoke to his brother Peyton Tuesday, with Eli offering some thoughts on the Cowboys, whom Peyton's Broncos play this week, and Peyton doing the same about the Eagles, whom the Broncos played last weekend.
