The Giants may have been practicing, but no one was watching that. All of the attention -- from the media anyway, with clicking digital cameras and smartphone video capabilities -- was focused on the two wide receivers who are recovering from injuries and have not been participating in the workouts.
Standing just behind the actual action, Victor Cruz and Odell Beckham Jr. were having a catch. Each stood on one leg during the exchange, although it's unclear if it was a part of their rehab or just for fun. Beckham even threw in a few one-handed grabs while playing one-legged.
It looked like fun, not actual work. Maybe it was both.
While Cruz and Beckham have been sidelined, they've had an opportunity that eluded them last year when they were teammates for the first time. At the start of the 2014 season Cruz was playing and Beckham wasn't. Then, after Cruz tore his patellar tendon, he was sidelined and Beckham burst onto the scene.
So even though they aren't pieces of the offense yet, they are getting closer and forging a relationship that they hope will soon take them beyond the trainer's table to the field.
"Me and Odell have been close from the day he walked in here," Cruz said after the first workout of minicamp on Tuesday. "It's just that we've been spending more time together, even off the field. He's come by my house a bunch, I've gone by his place. We just talk, and it's gotten us closer.
"I'm happy for him, I'm happy for all of his success," Cruz added. "And now it's time for us as a team to enjoy that success together and hopefully go deep into the playoffs and make a Super Bowl run."
