He isn't quite a household name - it's not easy getting pub in Cincinnati, unless your name is Chad Johnson/Ochocinco, and he's not there any more - but defensive tackle Geno Atkins should be on the tip of your tongue when it comes to dominant players in today's NFL.

The 25-year-old Atkins today agreed to a five-year, $55 million contract extension, thus keeping Atkins from entering unrestricted free agency or getting slapped with the franchise tag after the season.

Atkins will now be the second-highest paid defensive tackle in the NFL behind Ravens tackle Haloti Ngata, who signed a five-year, $61 million contract in 2011.

Atkins was a fourth-round pick in 2010, but has since emerged into one of the league's most effective defensive players.
