Broncos third-year linebacker Von Miller, one of the league's top defensive players, will miss the team's first six games after being slapped with a suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

Miller acknowledged and accepted the terms of the suspension in a statement issued through the NFL Players Association.

"The Substances of Abuse policy requires everyone to comply with the rules," Miller said. "Although my suspension doesn't result from a positive test, there is no excuse for my violation of the rules. I made mistakes, and my suspension has hurt my team, Broncos fans, and myself. I am especially sorry for the effect of my bad decision on others. I will not make the same mistake about adhering to the policy in the future."

Miller reportedly spilled one urine sample he provided to the league, and another sample was severely diluted. Under the league's substance abuse program, discipline can occur if there are improprieties in the testing system, even if there is not a positive test for banned substances.

"During my time off the field, I will work tirelessly and focus exclusively on remaining in peak shape," Miller said. "I look forward to contributing immediately upon my return to the field and bring a championship back to the people of Denver."

Among the games Miller will miss is a Week 2 matchup against the Giants at MetLife Stadium.
