Newsday's Bob Glauber goes the extra yard for the inside scoop on the NFL.
RENTON, Wash. -- The game will come down to Denver vs. Seattle, but don’t count out Omaha.
That city, of course, has gained some measure of national recognition this month as the favorite check of Peyton Manning, who routinely barks the word at the line of scrimmage dozens of times each game. The Seahawks defense, though, says it isn’t going to fall for it. Rather than try to figure out what...Read more »
RENTON, Wash. -- The Seahawks may be the first team since the 1990 Buffalo Bills to go to a Super Bowl without an active player who had played in the game previously. But Russell Wilson made sure to make mention of the fact that he’s actually been to a Super Bowl before.
In fact, he went last year to the game in New Orleans between the Ravens and the 49ers. He wanted to get “a feel for” the...Read more »
Patriots coach Bill Belichick recently floated the idea of eliminating extra points because kickers almost never miss them (there were only five missed PATs in the entire 2013 season). Well, it appears NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is open to at least considering the idea, and told NFL Network’s Rich Eisen that one proposal could draw some attention from league owners.
Here’s how it would...Read more »
-- Don't be surprised to see a close outcome between the Seahawks and 49ers in Sunday's NFC Championship Game. Consider: Over the last six years, the NFC title game has been decided by seven points or less. That includes two overtime wins by the Giants (in 2007 and 2011) . The 49ers won last year's NFC Championship Game over Atlanta, 28-24.

The Jets removed a potentially major distraction this past week by extending Rex Ryan's contract through at least the 2015 season. Less than a month after telling a raucous locker room after the Jets' season-ending win over the Dolphins in Miami, team owner Woody Johnson put his money where his mouth is by making sure Ryan didn't go into next season as a lame duck.
Ryan may not have received...Read more »
One of the biggest reasons Peyton Manning chose the Broncos after a frenzied free-agent chase in 2012 was the presence of John Elway, the legendary quarterback who now serves as the team's vice president of football operations.
Elway's advice served Manning well during the decision-making process leading up to his signing, and the former quarterback's presence continues to benefit Manning.
"John...Read more »
While it appeared Ken Whisenhunt was ticketed to go to Detroit, the Chargers' offensive coordinator reversed field and opted for the Titans' head coaching job.
Unlike the Lions, the Titans don't appear to have a ready-made roster for playoff contention. For starters, there still are serious questions about whether Jake Locker, a former first-round pick, is a legitimate starting quarterback....Read more »
There's already plenty of second-guessing about the Lions' choice of Jim Caldwell as head coach, especially after the team missed out on its first choice of Ken Whisenhunt. But Caldwell, the former Colts head coach and Ravens offensive coordinator, walks into a good situation with his new team.
He already has a franchise-caliber quarterback in Matthew Stafford, who has thrown for a combined...Read more »
After evading several attempted tackles by San Diego Chargers defenders on a punt return in the second quarter of Sunday's AFC divisional game, Denver Broncos wide receiver Eric Decker had a clear shot at the end zone.
Until he tripped over his own feet.
Regardless, it was still an impressive 47-yard return, and it didn't do any damage to the Broncos as they went on to beat the Chargers,...Read more »
With Ryan Mathews (ankle) gimpy, the Chargers may use a heavy dose of former Dolphins first-round running back Ronnie Brown. Expect former Jets running back Danny Woodhead to see plenty of action, too, especially in the short passing game.
Jim Harbaugh has done something not even Bill Walsh did during his Hall of Fame run with the 49ers. Harbaugh is the first coach in team history to reach...Read more »
