Glauber's NFL Hot Reads
Newsday's Bob Glauber goes the extra yard for the inside scoop on the NFL.
Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians, who has one of the greatest offensive minds you'll come across, is a master at helping his players achieve maximum effectiveness. Case in point: When he has a big-time receiver approaching age 30, he'll change things up by lining him up in different spots.
"Because guys lose a step at age 30," he said. "It's just natural. As hard as they...Read more »
It didn't take Carson Palmer long to make a positive impression with the Cardinals.
But that doesn't mean Palmer will remain the Cardinals starter indefinitely. If Cardinals GM Steve Keim sees someone he likes in the draft, he's taking him.
"I don't care who our quarterback is. If you fall in love with a college quarterback and you think he can be your long-term answer, you have...Read more »
Since taking over in January as Cardinals general manager, Steve Keim has made a whopping 191 transactions on Arizona’s roster. That includes high-profile deals such as the trade for quarterback Carson Palmer, the drafting of former LSU star cornerback Tyrann Mathieu and signing pass rusher John Abraham.
But ask Keim about the one unheralded signing he’s most proud of: Paul Fanaika.
"He’s...Read more »
Former Falcons and Jets defensive end John Abraham was hoping for a big payday on the free agent market, but the 35-year-old pass rusher didn’t find a suitor until just before the start of training camp. He agreed to a two-year, $4.6 million deal that paid him $2.1 million this season – a relative pittance one of the NFL’s most productive players over the last decade.
But Abraham has turned...Read more »
It doesn’t take much to figure out the Bengals these days: When quarterback Andy Dalton is on, they almost always win. When he’s off, they lose.

-- There were four players who returned interceptions for touchdowns last week, increasing the league-wide total to 34 through eight games. That's the most interception return TDs in that span since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger.
-- Can't underestimate the significance of the Bengals losing defensive tackle Geno Atkins to a season-ending knee injury on Thursday night. Atkins is the heart and soul...Read more »
The no-huddle offense may be very popular in the NFL, but it’s certainly not new.
In the 1980s, Sam Wyche introduced a hurry-up scheme to the NFL as head coach of the Bengals, and took it all the way to within a few minutes of a Super Bowl title. But there was a speed bump, so to speak, to his speedy offense along that road.
Like a good TV announcer, I’ll just get out of the way and...Read more »
He isn't quite a household name - it's not easy getting pub in Cincinnati, unless your name is Chad Johnson/Ochocinco, and he's not there any more - but defensive tackle Geno Atkins should be on the tip of your tongue when it comes to dominant players in today's NFL.
The 25-year-old Atkins today agreed to a five-year, $55 million contract extension, thus keeping Atkins from entering...Read more »
Ryan Swope’s NFL career ended before it began.
As the Cardinals opened training camp today, the sixth-round rookie wide receiver announced his retirement because of continued concussion problems.
Swope, who had a concussion issue at Texas A & M and fell to the sixth round because of those concerns, was placed on the team’s reserve retired list.
“We knew Ryan has a concussion...Read more »
