Early in today's Jets-Bengals playoff game, it was announced that Jets punter Steve Weatherford was out with "an illness." After the game, Rex Ryan divulged that the problem was an irregular heartbeat that Weatherford experienced shortly before the game.

A Jets' source told Newsday that Weatherford had complained to the the team's medical staff before the game that he didn't feel right. He was immediately evaluated by the medical staff, and an electrocardiogram revealed an irregularity in his heartbeat.

Weatherford lobbied to play, but the medical staff was insistent that he not be permitted in the game. He will be evaluated with further tests in the coming days. Until those tests offer a conclusive diagnosis, the Jets' punting situation remains uncertain for next week's divisional round game against either the Colts or Chargers.

Jets kicker Jay Feely, who had never punted in an NFL game before, handled the punting chores and did a solid job. Feely averaged 31.4 yards on seven punts, and placed three inside the 20-yard line.
