If Brian Schottenheimer takes a job somewhere else and isn't back as the Jets' offensive coordinator next season, don't look for Bill Callahan to slide into that position.
Callahan, who was the assistant head coach/offensive line coach, is leaving to take over as the Cowboys' offensive line coach, a source confirmed last night. Callahan replaces longtime Dallas line coach Hudson Houck, who's retiring.
Callahan's contract expired and general manager Mike Tannenbaum said last week the team would be speaking with him soon and was hopeful of bringing him back.
There was talk in some circles that Callahan might be in line to become the Jets' offensive coordinator if Schottenheimer didn't return. Schottenheimer, who has two years remaining on his contract, interviewed with the Jaguars for their head-coaching position last week, but according to ESPN, Jacksonville has hired Falcons offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey.
Should Schottenheimer get a job elsewhere, Hue Jackson, who was fired yesterday by the Raiders, could be a candidate to replace him. Jackson is familiar with Rex Ryan, having served as the Ravens' quarterbacks coach in 2008 when Ryan was Baltimore's defensive coordinator.
The Jets also will have a new wide receivers coach next season. A source confirmed that Henry Ellard, who held that position the past three seasons with the Jets, won't be retained. Like Callahan, Ellard's contract expired.
