Darrelle Revis could have played Thursday night, but Todd Bowles didn’t want to chance it.

The cornerback was active for the Jets’ preseason opener against the Jaguars but never got in the game.

“Revis is still getting his legs underneath him,” Bowles said after the Jets’ 17-13 win. “He could have played, but I wanted to hold him out. Once we start playing longer on defense, he’ll start playing.”

Bowles said he never planned to play defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson so soon after being activated off the physically unable to perform list. “He only went through individuals [on Tuesday], so to play him six plays was going to be pointless,” he said.

Nose tackle Steve McLendon was inactive as a precaution because of a sore toe.

Guard James Carpenter warmed up but also was held out as a precaution. He was activated off the PUP list on Aug. 2 after missing the first four days of practice.

Receiver Kenbrell Thompkins is dealing with a groin injury. Though he warmed up “pretty well,” Bowles said he preferred to give Thompkins “a fresh start next week” after not practicing this past week.

Running back Dominique Williams left the game with a concussion and did not return.
