The longer it took for a diagnosis to be revealed, the grimmer Santonio Holmes' injury status seemed.

The Jets announced Wednesday that Holmes, who will require surgery for a Lisfranc injury in his left foot, was placed on season-ending injured reserve.

Multiple outlets had reported the news Tuesday night, with  Yahoo Sports! first saying that Holmes is "99 percent'' done for the year. Holmes suffered a Lisfranc injury in his left foot early in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 34-0 loss to San Francisco, multiple outlets reported.Lisfranc injuries occur when bones in the midfoot are broken or the ligaments that support it are torn.

After catching a 4-yard pass from Mark Sanchez on the first play of the fourth quarter, Holmes fell untouched and tossed the ball forward -- into the hands of cornerback Carlos Rogers, who ran 51 yards for a touchdown to make it 24-0. Holmes had to be helped off the field and later left on a golf cart.

Ryan was asked point blank Monday afternoon if Holmes had suffered a Lisfranc injury.

"You know what? It's hard to say,'' Ryan said. "I don't know what it's called. We know it's a foot injury and things like that. Are they ready to say that yet? I'm not sure, because quite honestly, I have no idea what that is. I don't want to give you wrong information.''

On Monday, Ryan said X-rays of Holmes' foot were negative, but that an MRI had been sent to multiple doctors. He also speculated the receiver could miss weeks with the injury.

Holmes has 20 catches for 272 yards and a touchdown.

The Jets already are without their biggest star. Although the team has yet to place Darrelle Revis on season-ending injured reserve, the All-Pro cornerback is expected to miss the rest of the season after suffering a torn ACL in a Week 3 win at Miami.
