CORTLAND -- Braylon Edwards knew he’d have to be patient.

If the Jets were going to call, they’d pick up the phone after the offseason program was well underway. So while Jet Nation clamored incessantly for his return, Edwards just waited. And waited.

His patience eventually paid off, culminating in a passed physical on Wednesday and a signed contract Thursday -- just before hopping on a bus bound for SUNY Cortland.

But Edwards isn’t just satisfied with a roster spot.

“I didn’t come where as a role (player), like, ‘Oh, I’m here to help.’ I came here to start,” said the wideout, who became a Jet for the third time.

“And if that’s not the case, then I came here to do whatever I can. So I’m just going to be giving everything I can to the practice field and we’ll see what happens in the end.”

The 30-year-old doesn’t only bring veteran leadership to a team full of new faces. He was a part of Rex Ryan’s playoff teams in 2009 and 2010, and as a result, developed a rapport with incumbent Mark Sanchez (And that relationship is bound to pay dividends on the field if the fifth-year quarterback is named the starter).

But with Santonio Holmes (PUP) sidelined with a foot injury, Edwards fills an immediate need in their receiving corps.

“Signing Braylon yesterday is big for us I think,” said Sanchez.

When the Jets brought in wide receivers Austin Collie and Laurent Robinson earlier this week for tryouts, some Jets fans wondered if the window had closed on a possible Edwards-Jets reunion. But a few days later those fans got their wish -- and so did Edwards.

“I’ve hoped it for the whole offseason,” the wideout said. “I prepared myself for it, as if it was going to happen. But I’d be a liar if I said I thought it was going to happen this fast. I thought it was going to be a situation that was going to happen later on in camp, possibly. But it happened before camp, I’m here, able to start with them, so I was pretty surprised.”
