Darrelle Revis to Richard Sherman: Get off Revis Island

Darrelle Revis may no longer be a Jet, but his production during his six-year career with the team cannot be denied.

While he was recovering from an ACL tear that cost him his 2012 season, guys like Richard Sherman were anxious to take the throne as the NFL’s top shutdown corner. But now that Revis is back in action -- and aiming to be at full strength for the Bucs’ season opener against his former team – the ex-Jet has a message for Sherman.

“He needs to quit attaching his career to my career,” Revis, who was traded to Tampa Bay days before the draft, told USA TODAY. “A lot of people need to have respect for this game. I'm not just talking about him. Respect what people have done to pave the way. Deion paved the way. Rod Woodson paved the way. Darrell Green. Mel Blount. Champ Bailey. Charles Woodson. Yeah, we're the next group, but you don't need to be getting into it with me.

“At the end of the day, this is a fraternity. We're all in this together, competing. But you don't have to shoot nobody else down.”

Revis said he doesn't know Sherman, but doesn’t dislike the Seattle defensive back either.

Nevertheless, he made one thing clear: “You can't crown yourself as anything in this league. You've got to earn it,” said Revis, a three-time All-Pro cornerback.

Back in February, Sherman tweeted “Women lie, men lie, numbers don't,” including a side-by-side of his career stats and Revis’. In subsequent interviews, the Seahawks cornerback has voiced his frustrations over being picked 154th overall in 2011, calling the combine and draft process "a shame."

In turn, Revis responded on Twitter, saying: “I never seen a man before run his mouth so much like girl. This dude just steady putting my name in his mouth to get notoriety @rsherman_25. …..@rsherman_25 I ain't your competition bro, @roddywhiteTV is!!! My boy @JohnGeiger_ (Revis’ business manager) got more followers then @rsherman_25. Sit down young pup & wait your turn.”

From there, a barrage of tweets from Revis’ camp ensued. And it appears the former Jet hasn’t finished making his point to Sherman – or the rest of the league.

“I don't have to prove nothing to nobody,” he said. “I put my game on film, and people can see the results.”

Asked if he has anything to prove to Sherman, Revis – according to the newpaper -- Revis just laughed.
