Geno Smith’s pass hit off the hands of receiver Thomas Mayo, hit off a defender's helmet and took a fortuitous bounce into the hands of a diving Garrett McIntyre. But instead of playing off the interception as a bit of unluckiness, the first-year quarterback took full responsibility for the play.

“I’ve got to put it on him,” Smith said. “I put the ball a little bit too high. It’s something I’ll correct, but it just takes time.

“You got to take care of the ball. As a quarterback, as an offense, you don’t want to turn the ball over. That puts the defense in tough situations and it limits your chances to score, so you’ve just got to take care of the ball.”

It was the rookie’s only major mistake during Wednesday’s OTA -- a throw during the 7-on-7 drill that was just inches away from falling to the ground as an incompletion. Despite appearing comfortable slinging passes all over the field, Smith noted that there still is an adjustment period with his new teammates and realizes that building chemistry will only come with time.

“As far as my game goes, every single thing needs to improve,” said the quarterback. “I’ve got to get better with my footwork and my drops. I’ve got to see the defense a lot quicker, I’ve got to get up to the line of scrimmage and spit the play out in the huddle a lot quicker.”

There has been much made about the Jets' quarterback situation and whether Smith will usurp Mark Sanchez for the starting role. However, Smith said he can only control his own performance and is not concerned with how the other quarterbacks are throwing the football.

“My job is to go out there and compete and so that’s what I do,” said Smith, who later divulged he's found new representation. “I stay focused within the lines. I’m trying to be a great teammate and trying to be a great competitor, and do my job and get better.”
