Is Quinton Coples the next Vernon Gholston?
Just seeing that question in a headline surely makes Jets fans cringe, especially after the failed tenure of Vernon Gholston, the sixth overall pick in 2008 who didn't record a single sack in his three seasons with the Jets.
But a season ticket holder brought up Gholston's name when asking defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman on a conference call whether there was any concern that Quinton Coples' recent position switch might lead to a similar debable.
The Jets plan to use Coples, who played defensive end as a rookie last year, as a rush linebacker in their 3-4 defense.
"We wouldn't do it if Quinton didn't have the ability to handle it," Thurman said.
Coples led the Jets' anemic pass rush last year with 5 1/2 sacks.
