Jeff Garcia has some advice for the Jets: Release Tim Tebow. Now.

After spending the offseason getting Mark Sanchez acclimated to the West Coast offense, Garcia thinks the next step for the team is getting rid of the quarterback distractions of a year ago.

"When you're a quarterback, you don't need artificial competition," Garcia, a four-time Pro Bowler who spent 12 years in the NFL, told USA TODAY Sports.

"And it's not fair to Tim to put him through all that. If there's a place for Tim that gives him a chance to be a contributor in an offense with another team, let him go be that guy."

The Jets have tried to seek out a trade partner for the former Heisman Trophy winner, but no team (at least not yet) is ready to pull the trigger. So even though it's clear Sanchez's true competition will be David Garrard and Greg McElroy this offseason, Tebow still plans to show up Monday at the team facility for voluntary workouts.

"If there's going to be competition at the position, it's not going to come from Tim Tebow," said Garcia, who played under Marty Mornhingweg in San Francisco and Philly, and also threw a career-best 4,278 passing yards with 31 touchdowns for the 49ers in 2000.

"Having Tebow there (last season) just became more of a distraction, more of a circus show. Obviously, it's their decision. But from an outsider looking in, having Tebow there doesn't bring anything positive. It just brings distraction."
