There have been plenty of stories in recent weeks suggesting that quarterback Geno Smith displayed a "diva attitude" with some teams in the run-up to last month's draft. But the Jets have been impressed with Smith from the first time they sat down with him the night before his pro day workout at West Virginia in March.

"Myself and a couple of our personnel men had dinner with [Smith] the night before his pro day, and [he was] quite an impressive young man at the dinner," Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said today on a conference call with Jets' season ticket holders. "We certainly talked football for a couple hours and understood then that he knew an awful lot of football. He had an excellent pro day.

"We decided to bring him into our facility [in early April] and went through some extensive football meetings with him and got to see his personality," he said. "He was quite impressive, both on and off the field."

The Jets drafted Smith in the second round, and he will now compete with Mark Sanchez, David Garrard, Greg McElroy and Matt Simms for the starting job.
