CORTLAND -- Santonio Holmes dodged a bullet it seems.

Less than two hours after Rex Ryan said his star receiver had broken a rib during the Jets' annual Green and White scrimmage Saturday, a Jets spokesperson confirmed X-rays were negative and Holmes is day-to-day.

Holmes had three receptions for 22 yards in the scrimmage. He was targeted five times by Sanchez and had one drop.

Ryan delivered the news about Holmes in alarmingly nonchalant detail.

"I don't know about Tone," he said. "I heard he might have broke a rib or something. I’m not sure about that. ...I don’t believe we had major injuries outside of – and again, I don’t know if Santonio did break a rib or not, but the fact that it was sticking out...was probably an indicator. I’m sure he’ll be fine. But we’ll have to check on him later."

Then he added with a laugh, "Other than that, he had a good day."

Holmes, who missed the last two training camp practices because of "general" soreness, was drilled by cornerback Antonio Cromartie on a second-half seven-yard reception.

Despite the Jets' thin receiving corps, Ryan at the time didn't seem too concerned about Holmes' injury.

“I mean, you’d love to have your No. 1 guy out there, your big gun out there," he said. "And he looked good today. Clearly you saw that him and Sanchez connected several times. It’s not ideal but you’ve just got to play the hand that’s dealt you.”
